When knitting with a Knifty Knitter loom, there are two types of knit that can be created: panel or tube knit. It is important to understand the difference between the two types of knit before beginning a Knifty Knitter project. The type of knit, panel or tube, makes a big difference in the finished look of the project.

Tube Knitting on the Knifty Knitter Loom

To tube knit on the Knifty Knitter loom, the loom is wrapped in a continuous pattern around the loom using all the pegs. When knitting off the Knifty Knitter loom, the knitting off is also done in a continuous circle around the loom. This creates a tube of fabric with no edges, similar to a sock. Tube knitting works well for socks, booties, mittens, and scarves. In the example of a scarf, the tube knitting would produce a scarf that is double in thickness with both sides of the scarf having the same appearance, rather than having a right and wrong side of the fabric.

To tube knit on the Knifty Knitter loom:

  1. Tie a slip knot and secure the slip knot to the anchor peg of the loom.
  2. Pull the yarn toward inside of the loom and in the direction of the first peg to be wrapped.
  3. E-wrap the peg by wrapping the yarn around the peg, creating a cursive letter "e" with the top of the "e" facing the outside of the loom.
  4. Continue doing this until all the pegs on the Knifty Knitter loom are wrapped.
  5. Knit off beginning with the first peg wrapped.
  6. Continue knitting off the knitting loom in a circular pattern, making rounds without stopping.

Panel Knitting on the Knifty Knitter Loom

To panel knit on the Knifty Knitter loom, knitting is done in a back and forth pattern. There is a starting and stopping peg used and the repetition of knitting off is done from one peg to another and back again, rather than in rounds. This creates a sheet of solid fabric with edges, similar to a blanket. Panel knitting works well for blankets, scarves, or any single thickness fabric. Panel knitting produces a right and wrong side of the knitted fabric, as both sides do not look the same.

To panel knit on the Knifty Knitter loom:

  1. E-wrap the yarn around the number of pegs desired. The number of pegs used should be determined by the width of the finished project.
  2. Double wrap the last peg in the row, so it is wrapped twice before continuing to knit off back across the loom.

Whether a project is panel knitted or tube knitted is determined by the pattern of wrapping and knitting off. Many types of stitched can be used for both methods. Some popular types of Knifty Knitter Stitches include:
